Rare Company: Episode 1 - Jamal Robinson

On Vulnerability, Racket Sports & Finding/Building Community
22

Welcome to the first episode of Rare Company, a brand new podcast from The Ampersand.

Our first guest is the brilliant Jamal Robinson, who writes Found Notes here on Substack. I stumbled across Jamal after the algorithm sent one of his Notes to the top of my feed. Curious, I clicked through to his newsletter and really enjoyed it. Then I discovered he was based in Augusta, Georgia, which is where I spent my teen years growing up.

I subscribed, we got chatting and it turns out he’s actually married to a very cool girl I went to school with! Small world!

In the podcast we discuss several other Substackers (Mary Roblyn, Temi Coker, Farah Winning and Robert, to name a few) and we talk extensively about Locked In, a community that centres Global Majority & Indigenous voices.

We also chat about the power of vulnerability, racket sports and process. In fact, Jamal says this is the first time he’s ever publicly talked about his process!

Jamal also reveals where he gets his inspiration and we round off the podcast with a Cultural Exchange.

A note on accessibility: If you would like to read a transcript of this episode, please access the web-based version of Substack rather than using the app and click the button just below the title.
