Writers Workshop: Creating a Story Bible
The Ultimate Writer's Toolkit & Six Exercises That Will Build Your Writing Muscle
If you’re new here, welcome to The Ampersand! It’s been such a fun, creatively-fulfilling five months since I first launched this Substack and I’m so very grateful for every connection I’ve made on this platform so far.
The latest bit of big news is that my debut novel Another Life was released last week! Some people have already finished it (astounding!) and I’m incredibly touched by the lovely reviews left on the book’s Audible page.
Since news of the novel broke a few weeks back, I’ve had a lot of questions about how on earth one might go about taking on such a massive writing project. The answer is simple: I’ve spent years building the necessary writing muscle required through writing on TV shows, creating original pilots of my own, taking part in numerous writers rooms and writing stage plays.
Generally speaking, I don’t think many people wake up one day and, having never written anything before, suddenly embark on writing a novel that has gone on to be published. Whilst I do believe anyone can write a book, it does take years of practice and building up skills.
But what if there was a way to accelerate that without missing out on the key lessons?
The following guide will help you create a robust story bible that will give you a roadmap through your creative project. The best part? You’ll be doing exercises throughout that will build your writing confidence and teach you valuable skills. You’ll learn new techniques for developing characters, creating settings, exploring themes, establishing structure and much more.
Having a toolkit like this earlier on in my writing career would’ve been an absolute game-changer and would’ve saved me a huge amount of time. With this in mind, I’m so happy to be able to share this with my paid subscribers as a way of saying thank you for the continued belief and support.
If you’re already a paid subscriber, don’t forget that another major perk of your membership is that you can ask me anything in the comments and will be guaranteed a response. You also have access to all archived Ampersand posts, including previous editions of Writers Workshop.
So, grab a pen or pencil and a note pad and let’s break the back of your story!
